My Story
This is true. The fact is having my gall bladder removed was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. Really.
You see, when you eat fat, typically your gall bladder processes it. When it doesn’t work correctly you can experience a tremendous pain. I’m talking about taking two major pain killer type pain.
So, my doctor suggested I have my gall bladder removed but the thing was he could not do it for another 10 days. If I went to the hospital that day, I could get the surgery done, but it would be done by the surgeon on call. Not something that I really wanted to do.
How was I going to last 10 days and live through these terrible attacks. The doctor simply said “restrict your fat intake”.
Huh?
Fats are the trigger, if you don’t eat them you won’t have an attack. I asked him how much fat I could eat and he said that everyone was different, but suggested eating no more than 3-4 grams of fat per meal. If I still got an attack, cut it back more. If I didn’t, try increasing it just a little at a time.
3-4 grams, how bad can that be? Yipes! A tablespoon of butter has 14 grams of fat, two tablespoons of half and half (about what you put in your coffee) has 3 grams.
If I have a cup of coffee in the morning I cannot eat any other fats. I thought this is impossible!
But, the next day I had a cup of coffee with cream and one toast with just a little butter and bammo! Attack and two pain killers (which kills the entire day, for me anyway).
So, starting at lunch that day I stuck to the 3 grams of fat per meal. I lost 10 pounds in 10 days.
The real challenge was finding enough interesting and flavorful recipes that had little or no fats. I found several great cookbooks (which I will be reviewing on this site in the future), one of the best and easiest to use was Metabolic Cooking by Karine Losier & Dave Ruel.
The thing I realized is if you learn how to cook foods with healthy ingredients then you will never need to go on another diet again.
